Quick Links: Coconut Oil

The New York Times today highlights the benefits and tastiness of coconut oil. Click here. From the article:

And while it’s true that most of the fats in virgin coconut oil are saturated, opinions are changing on whether saturated fats are the arterial villains they were made out to be. “I think we in the nutrition field are beginning to say that saturated fats are not so bad, and the evidence that said they were is not so strong,” Dr. Brenna said.

Be sure and check out two of the recipes in the sidebar, Coconut Oil Roasted Sweet Potatoes (especially good on a hard workout day, but either remove the brown sugar or substitute a little honey) and the Sauteed Shrimp with Coconut Oil, Ginger, and Coriander. If you try them, let us know how they taste!

  1. Now you just need to be able to buy it… So far only found one shop, and it is maybe 5x the price of good quality olive oil

    • Yikes! Where do you live, Thor?

    • Not sure where in London you are, but I found this online: http://cocovida.co.uk/cocovida-pure-organic-virgin-coconut-275ml-p-29.html

But you’re right. This is only 275ml for £7.99. I think I purchased 800ml for about $12 US on sale.

I wonder why it’s more expensive there? But I know of many folks here that buy it online for better deals too.

      • Thanks for looking it up. But you see what I mean? They are not sure whether to price it as food or as cosmetics – in terms of Coconut Oil this is deepest province

Researched benefits of virgin coconut oil (VCO):
It is a fantastic massage oil which softens the skin and prevents dryness and flaking. <<< AWESOME

It is also an alternative healthy cooking oil. <<< ALL 275ML OF IT

It has a low calorific content (or less calories than other oils). <<<< WHAT IS THIS SUPPOSED TO MEAN??!?! AND WHO CARES?

It is a superb hair conditioner. <<< AWESOME

It provides an immediate source of energy. <<< DONNO. TO HEAT YOUR APARTMENT?

It helps prevent obesity and overweight problems as part of a healthy diet. <<< GOOD

It helps control dandruff. <<< AWESOME

It supports tissue healing and repair. <<< AWESOME

      • Ah yes. I can see that conflating the cosmetic purposes with the culinary ones could make it hard to price and more expensive. Hmm…you already mentioned the health food store, and I would think those types of places would be your best bet. Maybe as it catches on in popularity it will get easier to find at a better price.

  2. London, England. And so far i have only found it in Holland & Barrett which is a health food store. Gotta keep looking. How does it compare in price to olive oil where you lve?
